His art is an unmistakable cocktail of rococo daintiness, Beardsley-esque technique and witty, decadent eroticism. He was obliged to move from one European capital to another as each outrageous new work was banned by the authorities.

April 1924 in Wien) auch bekannt als Marquis de Bayros, österreichischer Grafiker, Illustrator und Maler, dürfte einer der faszinierendsten Grafiker des fin de siecle in Österreich sein, dem auch heute noch - mehr als 80 Jahre nach seinem Tod - eine große Gemeinde Bewunderung zollt.

Dabei fällt es zunächst schwer, Bayros einzuordnen und zu bewerten. Häufig wird er in einem Atemzug mit Aubrey Beardsley und Félicien Rops, den beiden anderen großen Erotomanen, genannt. Im Unterschied zu jenen war Bayros jedoch häufig auch gezwungen, sein Talent den Gegebenheiten des Marktes unterzuordnen. Dennoch: In seinen Illustrationen zu den Klassikern der erotischen Literatur, in dem sich hier äußernden Kompositionstalent, im subtilen Spiel mit dem Ornament, in der Lust am prunkenden Milieu, offenbart sich ein Grafiker von höchstem Rang.
