André Masson was born in Balagny, France in 1896 and died in Aix-en-Provence, France in 1987. Masson was an early member of the Surrealist movement and, like his friends André Breton, Joan Miro and Max Ernst, worked in the technique of ‘automatism’ creating free-style drawings and sand paintings. By the 1930’s Masson had rejected surrealism saying “that one could not arrive by this means at the intensity essential for a picture.” He began to focus on the human condition, which he described as “the fundamental impulses of love and hatred”; and his paintings showed his reaction to the Spanish Civil War. In the early 1940’s Masson moved to America and became interested in mythical imagery and many of his later works show a focus on African American and Native American myths.
Masson was influenced by American art and artists, but had a much greater influence on American artists. Masson’s ideas on Surrealism and his keen knowledge on European art affected the working abstract expressionist group that was being formed in New York in the 1940’s. Masson was integral in the American artists understanding of current and past European art history.
