During the 1920's era, original printmaking in Austria was dominated by three talented artists, Luigi Kasimir, Hans Figura and Max Pollak. The first two artists made their international reputations upon their fine colour etchings and aquatints of city views and landscapes. Pollak was as adept in these genres as the other two artists, however, he was equally talented in the fields of portraits, figure studies, nudes and animal depictions. In these categories Pollack used the drypoint medium to its finest advantage.
Born in Prague, Max Pollak studied art in Vienna at the Academy under William Unger and Ferdinand Schmutzer. Pollak excelled in all printmaking techniques, particularly drypoint, soft-ground etching and aquatinting, and by 1920 had established a large following in France, Germany, Austria and the United States. During this decade, in fact, the artist both lived and worked in Paris and New York. Today, Pollak's original etchings and engravings command strong prices and major museums in London, Paris, New York, Chicago, Prague , Berlin and Vienna own examples of his art.
Maria Ley is a prime example of the best of Pollak's engraved art. During the 1920's a number of Europe's most famous dancers and actresses commissioned Pollak for their portraits. Some, such as this original example, were notorious for their sensual and erotic elements. To this day, however, these portrayals have been eagerly sought after because of the artist's mastery of delineating the grace and beauty of the female form.
Vervielfaltigende Kunst: During the early twentieth century leading art journals around the world published original etchings, lithographs and woodcuts on a regular basis. Some of the greatest prints from this vital era were commissioned and published by The Studio, in London, Pan, in Germany, The Print Connoisseur, in America and Vervielfaltigende Kunst, in Vienna.
Vervielfaltigende Kunst issued it first original etching in 1871. During the following sixty years it published masterworks by Austrian, German, Czech, Swiss, French, Dutch and English artists. More internationally focused and less conservative than most of its rival publishers, Vervielfaltigende Kunst became a spearhead for the vibrant experiments of Symbolist, Expressionist and Secessionist artists during the initial decades of the twentieth century. Also, it superb printing techniques were second to none. As a result, Vervielfaltigende Kunst is now regarded as a most vital fine art publisher of its day and individual prints from this publication are eagerly sought after on the international market
