This unique exhibition at The Courtauld Gallery in Somerset House is the first to celebrate the important creative collaboration between Toulouse-Lautrec and his close friend Jane Avril. A favourite at the Moulin Rouge in he late 19th century, Avril was an emblematic figure in the French artist's world of artists, dancers, cabaret actors, musicians and courtesans. Running throughout the summer and sponsored by the Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler Foundation, Beyond The Moulin Rouge examines Avril as a private individual, looks at the staging of her public identity and reveals the range of Lautrec's responses to his muse. Together, their remarkable creative partnership captured the excitement and spectacle of bohemian Paris.
About Somerset House
Somerset House, once the site of a spectacular Tudor palace, now includes a magnificent 18th century art gallery housing celebrated collections belonging to the Courtauld Institute Gallery, as well as the Embankment Galleries (which replaced the Hermitage Rooms and The Gilbert Collection - the latter re-opened at the Victoria and Albert Museum in June 2009).
